9° 48.42' N 125° 27.76' E 23 Jul 2014 08:26 20.0 None None Near Surigao just SE of main ferry terminal. Back on Mindanao after 3 months. Long day starting 5:20 arrived here about 17:00 after sailing and motorsailing and with the kite up and down twice covering 55 NM. Lots of current and disturbed water near Surigao.
10° 7.99' N 124° 32.83' E 22 Jul 2014 07:31 3.0 0.0 0 Goodbyes to Shah and an easy jib only sail to Pitogo on Lapinin Is, NE Bohol Is. Good protection from most directions.
10° 8.9' N 124° 10.55' E 20 Jul 2014 08:05 13.0 0.0 0 Needed to get out of Cebu while the next typhoon passed to the north. Decided on trying NE Bohol in channel between Handayan Is. Trip over started benign but winds steady 20 - 25 knots SW while trying to sail between Olango Is and reefs to the East. A bit rough and Shanghaied overpowered with working jib and both reefs in main so going to windward sometimes at 9 knots and tacking hard work for both of us. When approaching anchorage hit with 42 knot squall and we were not prepared with the same two reefs and half a jib - way too much rag so quite hard to control until we got jib put away and managed to keep below 11 knots most of the time. Channel narrowing so waited for lull to turn around and drop main. Suffered small tear along old batten stitching which we repaired next day. Shah also had exciting time - only because they were trying to catch us... Nice protected spot although mozzies pretty keen. Roast pork Rib and potato dinner on Shah - Sheila is a wonderful cook.
10° 19.7' N 123° 58.4' E 19 Jul 2014 03:40 8.0 0.0 0 After a half day sail from Port Carmen, anchored with Shah off Cebu Marina. Met Francis aboard Charisma on his way out with new crew. The rest of the day spent at marina chandlery, Ayala Mall coffee shops, supermarket, clothing shops, hardware etc. Then a ordinary dinner with ordinary live music but with good people watching and back to the boats after 1am.
10° 35.0' N 124° 1.7' E 15 Jul 2014 14:00 8.0 0.0 0 Big day sail from Bantayan Is to Port Carmen. Were hoping for Malapascua to dive with the thresher sharks but another typhoon forcast to pass to the north and bring strong winds. So although Shah started late as usual there was good bit of kite flying and ideal conditions for Shanghied. En route we decided to enter Port Carmen in the dark using a track from Catamini and waypoints from Shah - n problems although there were several fishing bankas in the channel. Andy damaged his kite when a squall hit with little warning and will get it repaired in Cebu at Hydes. Over next few days visited the town with Sheila and later Tim and Ben Mumby and their catamaran building/fitting out yards and Zieks and Pepeys yards and met some nice cruisers including Dave of Merlin last seen in Bonbonon.
